Nest weavers (In Pictures)

Birds are the most consistently inventive builders, and their nests set the bar for functional design in nature. The bird,” Baya weavers” are highly gregarious, sparrow sized and popularly known for excellent nest-weaving skills, these birds are commonly found in South Asian countries.

A widespread weaver that is known for its nest—a long hanging nest with a bulbous chamber and a narrow tubular entrance. The nests are woven with long strips of paddy leaves, rough grasses and long strips torn from palm fronds. A male bird is known to make upto 500 trips to complete a nest.

The birds use their strong beaks to strip and collect the strands, and to weave and knot them while building their nests. They are found at Grassland, scrub with scattered trees, mangroves and cultivated areas.
