Kathmandu : Girls Get Equal, a global campaign of Plan International has been launched at provincial level in Nepal on 8th March on the occasion of International Women’s Day. The campaign was launched in five province through a story telling event by young girls and boys with the theme of “My story, a Big story, We are able and equal” and calling for an equal power to girls. The campaign launch events were held in Sunsari, Rautahat, Hetauda, Banke and Baglung.
The story telling event aimed to provide a platform to girls and boys to share their stories of power and motivation so that it will enable them to take lead in a movement building for girls equality in Nepal, said Shreeram KC, Communications Manager of Plan International Nepal. A total of 25 young girls and boys; 15-24 years old; have narrated their stories those were focused on their journey against inequalities they faced, injustice, discrimination and violence and a step taken by those youth to change the mindset of decisions makers and their surroundings.
Government representatives from provincial level, local leaders, youth groups, media, sports persons, and the development partners representatives attended the event and shed light about the importance of equality in the lives of girls and boys.
The campaign was announced in October 2018 on the occasion of International Day of the girl and has been launched in about 50 countries where Plan International operates programme. Globally, the campaign is demanding for the equal power, equal freedom and equal representation for girls.
AYON, a network of youth organizations, and We For Change; a youth led organization also collaborated for provincial launch in the participation of various other youth actors and organizations.
