Kathmandu : Volunteers collected 36 metric tonnes of waste in course of cleaning the various rivers and the Ring Road area in the Kathmandu Valley today. The collected waste was managed with the help of local governments.
The area on the bank of the Bagmati river below Gusinggal,Lalitpur was cleaned today as part of the 297th week of Bagmati Cleaning Mega Campaign. Five metric tonnes waste was managed from this area.
Province Assembly member duo Dipendra Shrestha and Dharma Raj Regmi, the High-Powered Bagmati Civilisation Integrated Development Committee chairman Narendra Raj Basnet and volunteers took part in the cleaning.
Four hundred volunteers from various organisations as well as Nepal Army, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force personnel participated in the cleaning works today, said campaigner and member of the Board of Directors of the Committee, Mala Kharel.
Campaign to Clean Rivers and Areas along Ring Road in Kathmandu Valley was started on May 19, 2013. Similar campaigns were also started in other places across the country. Despite these campaigns, the public has voiced that the rivers and public places are not clean as expected.
The government has declared 2075 BS as the sanitation year but has not brought effective programmes for the same. RSS
