Campaign launched to protect vultures in Udayapur

Gaighat, Udayapur : A campaign has been launched to protect vultures inhabiting in the Sugachari cliff at Mainamaini of Belaka Municipality-7 in the district.

As part of the drive, the Municipality has devised various plans wherein animal carcasses are brought to the area for the vultures to eat, said the municipality mayor Durga Kumar Thapa.

The area houses some 600 vultures at present. During the day, they reach as far as neighbouring and surrounding districts including Khotang, Bhojpur, Sankhuwasabha, Dhankuta, Terhathum, Panchthar, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Saptari for prey, and return back to the area in the evening, said a local resident.

“Food will be managed for the vultures two times a month. And a drive has started to plant Simal (bombax) tree saplings in the area for the scavengers to shelter,” he said. Likewise, preparations are underway to bring in ornithologists for the study of the birds, said the Municipality. RSS
