Kathmandu : Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun has underscored the need of development and marketing of the mineral resources, describing the mineral resource as one of the basis for the country’s prosperity.
Inaugurating the Ninth Nepal International Geological Congress organized by Nepal Geological Society here today, he said, “The complex geology and dynamic geomorphology has been creating challenges to the safe livelihood of our people, and also to the proper utilization of the natural resources and sustainable development of the country. It is our utmost need to start executing extensively our knowledge and skill of geosciences in the practice.”
In lack of practice we suffered a significant loss to our buildings and infrastructures during geo-disasters in the past, he added.
The 9th Nepal Geological Congress is organized under the main theme ‘Geo-science for Economic Prosperity and Sustainable Development’.
The Vice President said that the valuable mineral resources should be mined and marketed in a planned way.
Stating that the knowledge and application of geo-science is always complementary for a balanced, reliable and a sustainable development of any country, the Vice Preisdent believed that the findings of the researches to be presented in the conference wil surely augment the knowledge and skill of the Nepalese scientists as well as the global scientific community.
He pointed out to the urgent need to formulating the Nepal Geological Council to make the profession of the Nepalese geologists ‘more organized, honoured and accountable.’
National Planning Commission (NPC) member Dr Krishna Prasad Oli stressed the need of proper management and utilization of the natural resources.
National Reconstruction Authority’s chief executive officer Sushil Gyawali spoke on the challenges in the development of well-managed settlements due to the difficult geography and terrain of the country. He also shared the progress in post-earthquake reconstructions.
At the programme, Nepal Geological Society president Dr Kabiraj Poudyal, vice-president Ganesh Tripathi, conference coordinator Rajendra Prasad Khanal among the speakers shed light on the activities of the Society.
Geological scientists Dr Megh Raj Dhimal and Narendra Bahadur Kayastha were honoured on the occasion in recognition of their contribution to the development and of geology in the country.
As many as 150 geologists, geological scientists, mineralogists, engineers among the experts from 15 countries are participating in the conference that will last till November 21. The Society was established 38 years back. RSS
