KMC steps up drive to reclaim encroached land

Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has reclaimed around 100 ropani of public land encroached by illegal occupants.

KMC has repossessed 100 ropani of land in wards 3 and 4 of the metropolitan as part of its campaign to reclaim the encroached public land, said KMC deputy speaker Namaraj Dhakal.

KMC Mayor Bidhya Sundar Shakya had announced his plan to recover the encroached public land and build parks. The metropolitan has intensified its move to repossess the encroached land in all 32 wards, Dhakal said.

He said the flower and fruit plants will be planted in the recovered public land.  “Some of the wards do not have public land. But the encroachments are growing in the wards that have public land,” he said. “The metropolitan is preparing to build parks in the freed from illegal occupants.”

Hundreds of acres of public land have been encroached within KMC. “The metropolitan has been looking for public land to build green city,” said Dhakal. “We found some of the public land illegally occupied by private owner. We will remove the encroachers and build a futuristic park.”

He also informed that the KMC has been making preparations to call tenders for building the Shanka Park based in Dhumbarahi, KMC-4. The park is spread in 22 ropani land.

According to a study conducted by KMC’s Environment Management Department in 2017 April-May, there are 28 open spaces within Kathmandu Metropolitan city. The metropolitan is planning to build small parks in the open spaces.

Similarly, various agencies have been building parks and planting trees in Kathmandu Valley as part of the campaign to make the city green and reduce air pollution. Department of Urban Development and Building Construction has been building seven parks in the valley.

The department has been preparing to build a historic park in 35 ropani land in Chandragiri Municipality-1 and Switzerland Park in Nagarjun Municipality-7. In the same manner, there are also plans to buld National Development Park in 50 ropani land in Budanilkantha Municipality-1, and two parks in Dakshinkali Municipality-1 in 50 ropani land, Model Development mark in Tokha Municipality-3 in 10 ropani land and Conservation Expert Memorial Park in 18 ropani land of Nagarjun Municipality-7.
