Solukhumbu : The Department of Tourism upheld the verdict of the Supreme Court and decided to annul the Guinness world record certificate achieved earlier by Pemba Dorji Sherpa as the fastest Mt. Everest submitter.
On November 28, 2017, the apex court had issued a verdict to cancel the Guinness certificate of Sherpa saying Pemba failed to produce substantial documents approving his claim that he ascended the highest peak in 8 hours and 10 minutes.
A division bench of the court’s judges Cholendra Shamsher JBR and Dambar Bahadur Shahi responded to a writ petition filed by a team of Lakpa Gelu Sherpa, who scaled the Everest in 10 hours, 56 minutes and 46 seconds, seeking the annulment of Pemba’s Guinness certificate.
Pemba submitted fake documents to support his claim on the certificate, claimed Lakpa. Lakpa had claimed the Guinness certificate as the fastest Mt. Everest conqueror following his scale in May 25, 2003. With this, Lakpa has been retained as the fastest Mt. Everest conqueror, said a letter dispatched by the Department of Tourism. RSS
