KATHMANDU: The government has introduced strict law to punish those involved in polluting water resource and environment.
According to the Criminal Code 2017 that came into effect from August 17, anyone found guilty of polluting drinking water or water resource will be sentenced to three years in prison.
The Clause 111 (1) of the Code states that those polluting water used by ordinary people or water sources and make it undrinkable or using for other purposes will penalized. “They will be jailed for three years or fined Rs 30,000, or both.”
A person who uses drinking water sources for other purposes will be sentenced to six months in prison or Rs 5,000 or both.
Similarly, the Clause 112 has provisions to control environmental pollution. Sub-clause 1 of Clause 112 has provision punishment against those producing wastes, littering and dumping haphazardly. “If anyone causes pollution in environment, they will be sentenced for one year or Rs 10,000 or both.”
Sub-clause 2 of Clause 112 has restricted industries and companies from producing mechanical noise, heat and wastes without permission from the concerned authorities. “Anyone violating the law will face a five-year imprisonment or Rs 50,000 or both.”
