Muddy rain in Nepal due to Rajasthan dust: Weathermen

Kathmandu – The muddy rainfall that occurred in several parts of the country on Friday and Saturday was caused by westerly wind carrying dust from the Indian state of Rajasthan, said the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Rain showers in various parts of the country witnessed rain containing visible concentration of particles of sand and dust. The department said the cloud formed in the atmosphere after the dust a dust storm blew across Rajasthan. Rajasthan deserted had experienced storm a few days back. “The dust particles from the storm got mixed with the vapour and moved towards Nepal,” said DHM Director General Rishi Ram Sharma. “The westerly wind formed due to mixture of dust particles from the storm moved towards Nepal in the form of cloud, resulting in muddy rainfall in Kathmandu and eastern parts of Nepal on Friday and Saturday.” He made it clear that dust particles are required to form cloud but the westerly cloud this time contained excessive dust and dirt.

Locals of Kathmandu Valley, Kapilvastu, Bara, Biratnagar, Parsa, and Rautahat, among other places said the witnessed muddy rainfall on Friday and Saturday. They share how the rain stained their windowpanes, vehicles, clothes of pedestrian and other stuff left outside. Sharma said no one would have noticed it had there been a huge rainfall.

“The rainfall would have washed all the dirt if a huge rainfall had occurred. Everyone noticed the mud left behind by the rainfall as the rain didn’t last longer,” he said.
The department said the effect in Indian sky was seen in Nepal sky too. There is no immediate probability of such rainfall, the department said.
