KATHMANDU: In a bid to find out the reality of land to be undated due to dams constructed by India, a joint team is preparing to monitor the vulnerable areas of Nepal.
A joint-team of Nepal and India has been formed to discuss on the issue, and to monitor the affected areas, said Bharat RaJ Paudel, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Talking to Face-to-Face, Paudel said, “It has been decided that the joint team will monitor the areas but date is yet to be fixed.”
Several areas of Tarai in Nepal have been inundated during the rainy season since long. Nepalese people are forced to face loss of millions annually. The reasons behind inundation of Nepalese land are ineffective works of disaster management body of Nepal and construction of embankment by India in bordering areas.
Though the officials of two countries regularly discussed on the issue, the problem is yet to be solved. The concern is raised in each visit of Nepalese Prime Minister to India but it is gradually forgotten. Then Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba also discussed about the issue with chief minister of Bihar last year. Prime Minister KP Oli took up the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his India visit in first week of April.
As per India demanded the details of vulnerable areas, Nepal has already submitted the details to India. It is not new issue to monitor these areas. However, the government officials are hopeful about moving ahead after the formation the present government. But India has claims that Indian people suffer much than Nepalese people due to the floods.
As India constructs embanks on Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali, Mahakali and other small rivers, the water flow is blocked and it affects the Nepalese people directly.
