LALITPUR: Citing increase in sound pollution created by different concerts and musical programs at Jawalakhel of Lalitpur district, the central zoo located at Jawalakhel has initiated preparation to control the sound pollution.
The zoo comprises of 111 species of wildlife, having more than 800 animals. According to central zoo chief Chiranjibi Pokharel, the loud sound produced around zoo animals create problems to them. “This has affected the habitat of animals,” he said. “So we have asked metropolis office to take measures to control sound pollution in the zoo.”
The National Trust for Nature Conservation (NNTC) is patron of the central zoo. Sarita Gyawali, program director of NNTC, said that no study about impacts of sound pollution on zoo animals has been done yet. “It can affect on fertilization of animals. Loud sound affects human being and animals will certainly be affected from it,” she said.
After sound pollution affected the central zoo, Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) has planned to take measures for controlling sound pollution from July 17.
“The different musical activities being organized at Jawalakhel ground have caused high sound pollution, which has badly affected the animals in the zoo,” said Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan. “We are also preparing to control sound pollution in whole metropolis,” he added.
Several programs are organized at Jawalakhel ground on Saturdays. They have received complaints from general public too about the sound pollution around Jawalakhel, according to Mayor Maharjan.
