The Melamchi Water Supply Project will be organizing a program on Thursday to inaugurate the tunnel which will supply the water of Melamchi River of Sindhupalchok district to Kathmandu valley, a much-awaited drinking water project.
The task of digging the tunnel is likely to be completed by Tuesday evening, according to officials. Works are underway to complete Sindhu-Gyalthum stretch, the final last component of tunnel.
Speaking to Hakahaki, Rajendra Pant, Senior Engineer of Project a program has been fixed to mark the completion of tunnel. Minister for Water, Supply and Sanitation Bina Magar will be the chief guest of the program. “It is a major breakthrough in our project which will speed up the process of delivering water to Kathmandu valley,” Pant said.
The Project is considered to be the most viable long-term alternative to ease the chronic water shortage situation within the Kathmandu valley. The project is designed to divert about 170 MLD of fresh water to Kathmandu valley from Melamchi River in Sindhupalchowk district, mid-western Nepal.
