Govt steps up efforts to control air pollution

Kathmandu- A team of government inspectors have found that 32 industries failed to meet environmental standards for controlling air pollution, according to Department of Environment (DoE).

Those industries were penalized with fifty thousand for polluting the environment. The government data shows that in the fiscal year 2072-2073, about 75 industries had violated the environmental standards set by government.

Similarly, government inspectors are also monitoring the public vehicles. Out of 1234 vehicles that had undergone emission test, 565 vehicles were found failing the test. The department is monitoring in all seven provinces.

According to DoE Director General Durga Prasad Dawadi, government is preparing to establish a separate unit to monitor and control the air pollution in the Kathmandu valley.

Earlier, Minister for Forest and Environment Shakti Basnet had directed the government officials to take immediate measures to control air pollution in Kathmandu valley Government officials plan to keep a close eye on the major construction sites of Kathmandu valley where dust is highly producing. Dawadi informed that department will soon establish additional air-quality monitoring stations.
