Nawalparasi – Many lakes in West Nawalparasi district are facing the risk of extinction following human encroachment. The lakes that are at risk include Nandan Lake, Bhddhamangal Lake, Piparpati Lake, Bhutaha Lake and Sushilhawa Lake, which are shrinking every year as a result of human encroachment, said the local people. Nandan Lake at Palhinandan-6 is in the process to be put on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The lake that spans approximately 140 bigha of land has reduced to a mere pond without conservation efforts, said the locals. Budget meant for protection and conservation of lakes in the district gets frozen every year due to conservation obstructions by the encroachers. The encroachers have been tilling the land belonging to the lakes for years. Moreover, they have been demanding that they be given landownership certificates for the lands they have been tilling. RSS
