Flood Early Warning System (FES) which was implemented in West Nawalparasi has been operated in a systemic way as a result obtaining and disseminating information on warnings of flood has been made easier.
Warnings in such system are people-centred and the warnings are accurate, timely and understandable to the communities, contributing in reducing the loss of lives and properties by natural disasters such as flood and landslides among others. The system was installed at the Disaster Management Room at the District Administration Office, West Nawalparasi in the support of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law of province no 5.
According to the District Administration Officer at Parashi, Shambhu Prasad Marasini, the FES here had made easier in obtaining information on forecasting weather and monitoring the water level in Narayani River. The EFS, which is upscaled time-to-time, has probabilistic forecasting providing information about the likelihood of flooding as resulting in an additional hour of early warning.
Susta Rural Municipality Chairman Ram Prasad Pandey said that a high alert has been maintained in the risky zones. Pandey shared that security personnel, rescue and relief materials were ready while risks have been identified in the disaster-prone areas.
“Each ward has Disaster Management Committee and Task Force which are actively working,” he said. Helipad will be made in the police station in Susta considering the emergency air evacuation. Four rural municipalities and two municipalities in the district were at high risk of flood according to District Disaster Management Committee.
