Kathmandu– Nepal Forum of Environmental Journalists (NEFEJ) has welcomed a recent order made by Supreme Court, directing government to formulate necessary laws related to climate change.
Responding to a writ petition filed by advocate Padam Bahadur Shrestha, a joint-bench of Om Prakash Mishra and Justice Tej Bahadur KC had ruled government to formulate all laws related to climate change.
“Nepal is one among those countries hardly hit by the effects of climate change. It is affecting directly on the country’s natural heritages, physical infrastructures, agriculture and health. Given the wide-ranging impact on various sectors, the NEFEJ urges all stakeholders to be serious about SC order,” reads the press release issued by NEFEJ.
The development projects underway without forethought, excessive use of excavators, dozers, extraction of sand mines, deforestation and consumption of combustible fuels have further aggravated the climate change. The current Environment Protection Act does not have specific and clear provisions about climate change. The SC has also urged the government to effectively implement climate change policy until laws are formulated.
