KATHMANDU: Forum of 18 municipalities of Kathmandu Valley came up with 9-point commitment to control pollution, manage wastes, and maintain greenery.
The conference of representatives of 18 municipalities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur districts held on October 25 in Lalitpur, expressed the commitments to ensure rights to live in clean environment in line with the Constitution of Nepal 2015.
Organizing a press meet after the extensive meeting, forum coordinator Bidya Sundar Shakya, mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC), said, “Environmental cleanliness is our commitment. We will do what we can and will propose the federal and provincial governments for remaining ones.”
“We will ensure to provide clean air and water, peaceful and healthy environment for roaming, fertile and green lands, and clean rivers for the prosperity and progress of the Kathmandu Valley,” said mayor Shakya, publicizing the commitments. “We will develop work plans before implementing the commitments.”
The commitments are as following:
Ø The existing pollution of Kathmandu Valley will be gradually minimized as clean environment is inevitable for new life.
Ø The local bodies of the Valley are committed to promote aware, sensitive and humanitarian interests as per fundamental rights of clean and healthy environment.
Ø The municipalities will work jointly and individually to make the cities worthy for living with clean environment and developments. Our institutional structures will be mobilized to formulate environmental policies, laws, and standards and their implementation.
Ø We are collaboratively committed to execute helps, coordination and partnership programs for promoting environment protection and reducing risks against environment.
Ø In a bid to reduce pollution in Kathmandu Valley, we will waste scientifically, plant saplings, replace old vehicles, disconnect sewerage pipelines with rivers and sterilizing them, and improve harmful industries and professions.
Ø Awareness on environmental aspects will be maintained while carrying out development works.
Ø Quality of fuel will be maintained to make transportation sustainable and environment friendly to minimize harmful vehicle emissions and dusts along with taking initiatives to use clean energy.
Ø We will promote coordination and partnership among stakeholders including government, communities, business society, civil society for maintaining clean environment and environmental justice.
Ø The programs such as discussions, consultations and interactions for clean environment will be conducted and the expected environmental sanitation will be maintained in the Kathmandu Valley.
