Despite its announcement to plant as many as 10,000 trees within the current fiscal year, Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has only planted around 5000 trees until the end of monsoon season.
Earlier in June, the KMC had set a goal to plant 10,000 trees in the fiscal year 2075/76 (2018/19) after the government pledged to maintain 10 percent greenery at the local level. But the metropolitan city has only planted 5000 trees as of mid-October, said Chief of KMC Environment Department Hari Kunwar.
Trees are mostly planted in Neal during monsoon season. There is tradition to plant trees in other seasons as the chances are high for the new saplings planted during monsoon season to grow.
However, the KMC Environment Department Chief Kunwar claimed the tree plantation will continue throughout the year in all 32 wards of metropolitan. “We have a target to make Kathmandu green,” he said.
He said various organizations have been working to protect the newly planted trees. “We are planting trees as part of our goal to make Kathmandu a clean and green city,” said Kunwar.
