KATHMANDU: The water sources are getting dried and shifting away due to the annual landslides.
After use of bulldozers to construct roads, the deforestation is rampant, causing problems to water sources. Water sources of Taprama, Denbada and Bhandari Bada at Budhinanda Municipality are getting dried.
The water sources are shifting to valleys due to landslide of Guigad, said Nar Bahadur Rawal, chairman of Khaptad Chhededah Rural Municipality. “People are forced to depend on different water sources every year,” he said. “We will plan to plant trees and control landslides.”
Similarly, Chheddah lake of Khaptad Chhededah Rural Municipality is at risk due to the landslides. After the landslides and river damaged the land, irrigation projects are badly affected, increasing the number of dams, said Charan Singh Bhandari of Badhi Ganga-3.
According to a report of International center for Integrated Mountain Development revealed three years ago, 51 percent of land in the district is not worthy for living. Out of total area of the district, only 191 square kilometers is only safe for habitat. Only 19 places are suitable for living as per the preliminary report, said team member Prem Dangal.
Out of 24,888 households, only 5,029 are safe, according to the report. The landslide has affected at the area of 90 square kilometers.
The landslides swept away canal of Jaddi Hydropower Project last year, said Chiranjibi Shahi, chairman of Swami-Kartik Khapar Rural Municipality. “The landslides every year sweep away water sources too in Bajura. The sources of water shift away due to the landslides, which have left the projects in limbo,” he said.
