Kathmandu- On the eve of fourth BIMSTEC Summit, Nepalese Civil Society Mountain Initiative (NCSMI) on Wednesday urged Government to empower local community to build the resilience of the mountain communities and engage civil society organizations and their concerns to promote mountain economy and build resilience of the mountain communities.
In a memorandum submitted to Foreign Minister Pradeep Gywali, NCSMI requested government to invest in mountain with special consideration, leading to opportunities of inclusive and just growth and increment in income in the mountain region to address and reduce global inequality.
“We call upon the Governments of BIMSTEC member countries to focus on the greater cooperation to sustain mountain communities and take bold action on climate change. We would like to request Government of BIMSTEC countries to take serious consideration on focusing mountain issues and mountain communities in the SDG national implementation process,” the statement issued by NCSMI reads.
Climate Change is affecting water availability, which will have severe impacts on the lives at mountains and the downstream. Mountains are important not only for the inhabitants of mountains, but for millions of people living in lowlands. Mountain holds greater importance for advancing mountain economy and blue economy, statement reads.
