Pokhara – Disaster risk reduction and management is imperative for attaining prosperity and development for the country.
This view was echoed by disaster management experts and participants at an interaction on landslide mapping and risk reduction organised here by Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST)’s faculty of technology.
Minister for Agriculture, Land Management and Cooperatives of the government of Gandaki Province, Lekh Bahadur Thapa underscored the need of implementing community-based programmes for reducing the risk of disasters resulting from natural and human activities.
He said the provincial government was committed to protecting the life and property of the citizens, calling upon NAST to focus on practical studies and research.
Prof Dr Shovakanta Lamichhane suggested contributing to the campaign of prosperity through the appropriate use of various facets of science and technology. He said the expertise of the country’s academia and the intelligentsia should be utilised for attaining national development.
Geographer Prof Dr Krishna KC stressed on reaching the technologies developed by NAST down to the community level.
On the occasion, researcher Ram Prasad Rijal presented a paper on early warning system, expert Prem Bahadur Thapa shared a paper on hotspots of landslide risk in Gandaki Province, Prof Dr Jeevraj Pokharel presented a paper on community-based disaster risk reduction and chief of NAST’s technology department Dr Rabindra Prasad Dhakal shared a paper on the activities carried out by NAST regarding disaster risk reduction.
