Kathmandu- Chinese national Xia Boyu, a double amputee, scaled Mt Everest on Monday.Liaison Officer Gyanendra Shrestha informed that Xia reached atop at 8:40 am, becoming first person double amputee to reach Everest.
Xia had lost his legs in his first attempt in 1975 and it was his fifth attempt and his 40-year long dream has been achieved. He had attempted Everest in 2014, 2015, and 2016. In 2014, climbing season was cancelled due to an avalanche.
Earlier, Sudharshan Gautam climbed Everest in 2013 who was firs double arm amputee. Nepali women Nima Jangmu Sherpa also set the record becoming first women to climb Everest and Lhotse in this season. The climbing of Everest began from Sunday after icefall doctors prepared the route to the summit point. About 500 climbers from various countries are climbing Everest this season.
