Ministerial energy forum agrees to work for sustainable energy in Asia-Pacific

Kathmandu – Ministers and government officials from countries in Asia and the Pacific have expressed their commitment to scale up their share of renewables, increasing energy efficiency, and streamline the use of inefficient fossil fuels, to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy in the region, according to organizers.

The Second Asian and Pacific Energy Forum (APEF2) in Bangkok concluded on Thursday issuing ministerial declarations which has expressed a commitment to enhance cooperation in energy sector. The declaration lays out a serious of action to ensure sustainable used of energy. They have agreed for greater regional cooperation to facilitate cross-border infrastructures, according to the statement issued by organizers. From Nepal, Barsha Man Pun, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation attended the program. Addressing the program, Minister Pun requested the other countries to invest in the energy sector of Nepal.

Organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the Forum provided a platform for governments, the UN system, private companies, international organizations, and civil society organizations to review the region’s implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) on affordable and clean energy.

The Forum also assessed the inter linkages between SDG7 and other SDGs, along with the advantages and requirements of connectivity in the context of regional integration, and the benefits for Countries with Special Needs.
