Secretary-General of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Amjab Hussian B Sial has said that climate change has emerged as a major threat to meeting the increasing demand for safe and nutritious food in South Asia region.
Addressing consultation meeting on SARRC Agriculture Projects in Kathmandu on Friday, he said agriculture sector of South Asia is facing multiple problems and its contribution in the GDP of respective countries is decreasing.
“It is estimated that the region could lose between 10 to 50 percent of crop production by the end of century due to global warming,” he said. He further added, “The agriculture sector encounters massive challenges such as increasing population, shrinking arable lands and farm size, rapid urbanization, and impact of climate change and natural disaster.”
