Kathmandu : As many as 69 people have lost their lives so far across the country due to incessant rainfall and subsequent disasters. Issuing a press release on Monday, the Home Ministry said that the disaster has mostly affected 31 districts.
Thirty-one people have gone missing while 38 suffered injuries, and 16,520 families have been temporarily displaced. A total of 3,366 people were rescued so far and different organisations and state and local-level were active to make rescue and relief operation effective. Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force Nepal, people’s representatives, civil servants, locals and various organisations working in the sector of social and humanitarian sector were deployed at the coordination of District Disaster Management Committee for relief and rescue operation, according to the Ministry.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had already directed the ministries and the bodies concerned to intensify the rescue activities and ensure relief distribution and rehabilitation. In the press release, the Ministry Spokesperson, Ramkrishna Subedi, informed that high alert was maintained in the flood affected area to prevent the diseases with the mobilization of medical persons along with medicines and equipments.
The government and non-government mechanisms were made further effective to ensure essential services as foods, electricity, drinking water and communication. The people’s representatives have been urged to assist in the rescue and relief distribution. The Home Ministry sent generator to District Administration Office, Sarlahi, to run daily services and 1100 sets of tarpaulin sheets to Dhanusha.
Necessary tarps, mats and blankets have been set to Piutar of Bagmati rural municipality and Mahankal Gotikhel of Lalitpur. Helicopters are standby in Surkhet and Itahari for emergency assistance. Siraha, Sarlahi, Rautahat and Mahottari districts have been sent 3,000 tarps each from Hetauda.
The survivors have been provided shelters and essential foods in Itahari. Similarly, the search for the missing ones is continuous from the respective district disaster management committees.
The water level in the Kulekhani Reservoir of Makwanpur is getting record high. In case of the need to open the gates when the water touches upper limit, the lower areas will be made alert to avoid the loss of lives and properties.
